Charles Humble and I wrote about the press releases that IBM would be working with Oracle and the OpenJDK.
Although Harmony is an open-source project hosted at Apache, there was never much chance that they would get a testing kit to certify themselves as an open Java implementation. IBM has historically contributed a lot of work towards the project, and though it has gained other contributors it is still largely driven with IBM’s hand on the wheel.
Can Harmony survive without IBM’s involvement? Will Harmony keep going? As the magic 8-ball might say “Outlook not so good”. Of course, it says that about e-mail as well.
